Welcome to The Heraldry and Genealogy Society of Canberra. We look forward to seeing you in the Library, at a monthly meeting, at a Special Interest Group or at one of our education sessions.

Next Monthly Meeting – 4 August 7:30pm

At our August meeting, well known author and speaker, Dr Richard Reid, will speak on “The Assisted Passage - Records and Stories"

What was the 19th century equivalent of the ’Ten Pound Pom’ - the ‘assisted immigrant’. For most of the century it was the ‘assisted passage’ that attracted emigrants from the British Isles and Ireland to this distant continent, making the colonies competitive with the much cheaper fares to the USA and Canada. Virtually half of all immigrant arrivals between 1830 and 1900 came ‘assisted’ and but for the gold rush of the 1850s that proportion would have been much higher.  The story of how the ancestors of millions of modern Australians got here is the story of ‘assisted immigration’.

Please join us to celebrate National Family History Month.

In August, the Society will join all other societies in Australia to celebrate family history month.

There’s lots of opportunities to further your research whether you’re just starting or have been researching for longer than you care to admit.

Take advantage of the education sessions on offer, come to a monthly meeting or drop into our Library and chat to our helpful volunteers. If you're stuck, you can book a 'brick wall' session with our Research Officer.

More details will be added as we finalise our program.

And don’t forget to check out the National Family History Month website  – there’s plenty of activities if you’re travelling but, if you’re staying home, there’s also some great freebies under ‘Online Events’.
