About us
The Heraldry & Genealogy Society of Canberra Inc. was established in 1964. Its current membership is approximately 1060, which includes members from surrounding districts outside the Australian Capital Territory, such as Queanbeyan, Yass, Murrumbateman and Bungendore.
Our library is located at The Cook Community Hub, 41 Templeton Street, Cook, ACT. The library is unique in the ACT and contains a comprehensive collection of over 13 000 titles and many thousands of microforms, including all available Birth, Death and Marriage (BDM) indexes of the Australian States, a vast collection of Australian and Overseas Cemetery records, Monumental Inscriptions and Parish records.
We also maintain this Internet Website <http://www.hagsoc.org.au/> that reflects the business of the Society and value added services. Included in the services is access to the library catalogue, information on membership, meeting details, research services, our journal and its index, publications for sale, genealogical links including libraries and archives, members' interests and a sub-site on Australians in the Boer War of 1899-1902.
We also undertake wider "outreach" activities of an adult education nature in the Canberra region and southern and south-west towns of New South Wales where lecture teams known as the "HAGSOC Roadshow" are regularly invited to offer weekend seminars on Family History for local rural Family History Societies and Historical Societies. We publish a quarterly journal, The Ancestral Searcher, and pursue a vigorous publishing program.
Within the Society are a number of specialist interest groups which meet regularly and include: Computer, Continental, Convict, East Anglia, Heraldry, Irish, London, North of England and Scottish Interest Groups.
Monthly meetings of the Society are held at the Hughes Community Centre, Wisdom Street, Hughes, ACT, on the first Tuesday evening of each month at 8pm.
